The GLEAMing of the first supermassive black holes: II. A new sample of high-redshift radio galaxy candidates

While unobscured and radio-quiet active galactic nuclei are regularly being found at redshifts $z > 6$ , their obscured and radio-loud counterparts remain elusive. We build upon our successful pilot study, presenting a new sample of low-frequency-selected candidate high-redshift radio galaxies (HzRGs) over a sky area 20 times larger. We have refined our selection technique, in which we select sources with curved radio spectra between 72–231 MHz from the GaLactic and Extragalactic All-sky Murchison Widefield Array (GLEAM) survey. In combination with the requirements that our GLEAM-selected HzRG candidates have compact radio morphologies and be undetected in near-infrared $K_{\rm s}$ -band imaging from the Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy Kilo-degree Infrared Galaxy (VIKING) survey, we find 51 new candidate HzRGs over a sky area of approximately $1200\ \mathrm{deg}^2$ . Our sample also includes two sources from the pilot study: the second-most distant radio galaxy currently known, at $z=5.55$ , with another source potentially at $z \sim 8$ . We present our refined selection technique and analyse the properties of the sample. We model the broadband radio spectra between 74 MHz and 9 GHz by supplementing the GLEAM data with both publicly available data and new observations from the Australia Telescope Compact Array at 5.5 and 9 GHz. In addition, deep $K_{\rm s}$ -band imaging from the High-Acuity Widefield K-band Imager (HAWK-I) on the Very Large Telescope and from the Southern Herschel Astrophysical Terahertz Large Area Survey Regions $K_{\rm s}$ -band Survey (SHARKS) is presented for five sources. We discuss the prospects of finding very distant radio galaxies in our sample, potentially within the epoch of reionisation at $z \gtrsim 6.5$ .
The Serra do Bueno potassic diatreme: a possible hypabyssal equivalent of the ultramafic alkaline volcanics in the Late Cretaceous Alto Paranaίba Igneous Province, SE Brazil

Cretaceous, strongly alkaline mafic igneous provinces occur around the margins of the Ordovician to Cretaceous Paraná sedimentary basin of southern Brazil. The Serra do Bueno diatreme is situated in the southern portion of the largest of these alkaline provinces, the Alto Paranaíba Igneous Province in Minas Gerais. The well-exposed diatreme crops out close to the south-west surface limit of the São Francisco craton and is adjacent to several other poorly exposed ultramafic alkaline pipes, previously described variously as kimberlites (Barbosa, 1991) and lamproites (Ramsay and Tompkins, in press). The diatreme has two distinct facies: (1) a crater facies dominated by lapilli tuffs; and (2) a magmatic hypabyssal facies formed by a relatively fresh ultramafic (MgO = 15 wt.%) potassic (K2O/Na2O = ∼ 1.5) intrusion that contains xenoliths of meta-sediments, feldspathic gneiss and dunite. It is massive and porphyritic, with large olivine phenocrysts (Fo87) and smaller crystals of diopside (Ca50Mg44Fe6), phlogopite, perovskite, ilmenite and zeolites in a fine-grained groundmass that contains altered leucite and up to 20% devitrified glass. The Serra do Bueno intrusion shows a strong enrichment in light relative to heavy rare earth elements, with La/Yb of ∼85. Its initial 87Sr/86Sr (0.705176) and 143Nd/144Nd (0.512312) isotopic ratios are similar to those of other intrusions (e.g. Limeira 2) and lavas (e.g. Presidente Olegário) in the Alto Paranaíba Igneous Province. This suggests that these Late Cretaceous alkaline magmas were all derived from a similar source, predominantly within the subcontinental lithospheric mantle.
Laser 40Ar/39Ar analyses have yielded an isochron of 90 ± 4 Ma for the Serra do Bueno intrusion. This age is higher than the corresponding K/Ar bulk-rock age for the same sample but similar to K/Ar ages determined on mica separates from both intrusive and extrusive rocks in the Alto Paranaíba Igneous Province.
Somersetite, Pb8O(OH)4(CO3)5, a new complex hydrocerussite-related mineral from the Mendip Hills, England

The new mineral somersetite, has been found at Torr Works (‘Merehead quarry’) in Somerset, England, United Kingdom. Somersetite is green or white (typically it is similar visually to hydrocerussite-like minerals but with a mint-green tint), forms plates and subhedral grains up to 5 mm across and up to 2 mm thick. In bi-coloured crystals it forms very thin intergrowths with plumbonacrite. The empirical formula of somersetite is Pb8.00C5.00H4.00O20. The simplified formula is Pb8O(OH)4(CO3)5, which requires: PbO = 87.46, CO2 = 10.78, H2O = 1.76, total 100.00 wt.%.
The infrared spectrum of somersetite is similar to that of plumbonacrite and, to a lesser degree, hydrocerussite. Somersetite is hexagonal, P63/mmc, a = 5.2427(7), c = 40.624(6) Å, V = 967.0(3) Å3 and Z = 2. The eight strongest reflections of the powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern [d,Å(I)(hkl)] are: 4.308(33)(103), 4.148(25)(104), 3.581(40)(107), 3.390(100)(108), 3.206(55)(109), 2.625(78)(110), 2.544(98)(0.0.16) and 2.119(27)(1.0.17). The crystal structure was solved from single-crystal XRD data giving R1 = 0.031. The structure of somersetite is unique and consists of the alternation of the electroneutral plumbonacrite-type [Pb5O(OH)2(CO3)3]0 and hydrocerussite-type [Pb3(OH)2(CO3)2]0 blocks separated by stereochemically active lone electron pairs on Pb2+. There are two blocks of each type per unit cell in the structure, which corresponds to the formula [Pb5O(OH)2(CO3)3][Pb3(OH)2(CO3)2] or Pb8O(OH)4(CO3)5 in a simplified representation. The 2D blocks are held together by weak Pb–O bonds and weak interactions between lone pairs.

Background
Our understanding of the complex relationship between schizophrenia symptomatology and etiological factors can be improved by studying brain-based correlates of schizophrenia. Research showed that impairments in value processing and executive functioning, which have been associated with prefrontal brain areas [particularly the medial orbitofrontal cortex (MOFC)], are linked to negative symptoms. Here we tested the hypothesis that MOFC thickness is associated with negative symptom severity.
MethodsThis study included 1985 individuals with schizophrenia from 17 research groups around the world contributing to the ENIGMA Schizophrenia Working Group. Cortical thickness values were obtained from T1-weighted structural brain scans using FreeSurfer. A meta-analysis across sites was conducted over effect sizes from a model predicting cortical thickness by negative symptom score (harmonized Scale for the Assessment of Negative Symptoms or Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale scores).
ResultsMeta-analytical results showed that left, but not right, MOFC thickness was significantly associated with negative symptom severity (βstd = −0.075; p = 0.019) after accounting for age, gender, and site. This effect remained significant (p = 0.036) in a model including overall illness severity. Covarying for duration of illness, age of onset, antipsychotic medication or handedness weakened the association of negative symptoms with left MOFC thickness. As part of a secondary analysis including 10 other prefrontal regions further associations in the left lateral orbitofrontal gyrus and pars opercularis emerged.
ConclusionsUsing an unusually large cohort and a meta-analytical approach, our findings point towards a link between prefrontal thinning and negative symptom severity in schizophrenia. This finding provides further insight into the relationship between structural brain abnormalities and negative symptoms in schizophrenia.

The strain of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) prevalent in south-east England produced in one acute hospital in a year 40 infections (bacteraemia, pneumonia and surgical wound, skin and urinary tract infections) with three attributable deaths. Rigorous measures succeeded in controlling the outbreak despite its extent, but our results suggest that less stringent measures could fail to control outbreaks of this scale. Several subsequent localized outbreaks within the hospital, probably caused by separate re-introductions of MRSA from other hospitals, were controlled by re-instigation of control measures on individual wards. The overall success of the intervention was shown by the decline in the incidence of MRSA infections from 27 in the 6 months beforehand to 2 in the most recent 6 months, and by the decline in the prevalence of colonization among patients 10 or more days in hospital from 52% immediately before the intervention to 3% 7 months after it. The incidence of attributable morbidity and death without control measures warrants a concerted effort to tackle the epidemic in all affected hospitals in Britain.

In 2005 we obtained very precise interferometric measurements of the pole-on rapid rotator Vega (A0 V) with the longest baselines of the Center for High Angular Angular Resolution (CHARA) Array and the Fiber Linked Unit for Optical Recombination (FLUOR). For the analysis of these data, we developed a code for mapping sophisticated PHOENIX model atmospheres on to the surface of rotationally distorted stars described by a Roche-von Zeipel formalism. Given a set of input parameters for a star or binary pair, this code predicts the interferometric visibility, spectral energy distribution and high-resolution line spectrum expected for the system. For the gravity-darkened Vega, our model provides a very good match to the K-band interferometric data, a good match to the spectral energy distribution – except below 160 nm – and a rather poor match to weak lines in the high dispersion spectrum where the model appears overly gravity darkened. In 2006, we used the CHARA Array and FLUOR to obtain high precision measurements of the massive, non-eclipsing, double-line spectroscopic binary Spica, a 4-day period system where both components are gravity darkened rapid rotators. These data supplement recent data obtained with the Sydney University Stellar Interferometer (SUSI). Our study follows the classic 1971 study by Herbison-Evans et al. who resolved Spica as a binary with the Narrabri Stellar Intensity Interferometer (NSII). We will report on our progress modeling the new interferometric and archival spectroscopic data, with the goal towards better constraining the apsidal constant.

Objectives: We aimed to determine the need for revision adenoidectomy following the standard technique of blind curettage with digital palpation.
Methods: Within a district general hospital, we undertook a retrospective study of 3231 children who underwent adenoidectomy between 1996 and 2003, 53 of whom required revision adenoidectomy. The main outcome measure was the number of children needing revision adenoidectomy.
Results: A total of 53 children required a repeated operation for recurrence of symptoms (1.6 per cent); of these, 42 were for treatment of glue ear, five were for nasal symptoms and six were for adenoidal infection.
Conclusion: Adenoidectomy performed without vision may be one of the reasons for recurrence of symptoms. Residual adenoids are acknowledged in the literature as one of the complications of the traditional technique. We highlight the fact that the need for revision adenoidectomy is not uncommon and suggest that we should improve our surgical technique in the UK by visualization of the postnasal space either by a mirror or an endoscope.

Histocytic necrotizing lymphadenitis (HNL), also known as Kikuchi's disease is a benign self limiting disease of unknown origin. It effects cervical lymph nodes, predominantly in young females. It is well described in the pathology literature, but little is written about this in the ENT literature, as few clinicians are probably aware of this condition. Five cases of cervical Kikuchi's disease are presented with a brief review of the literature.

We report the case of an acute onset facial paralysis which was caused by a benign lymphoepithelial cyst found in the parotid, an association which is a rarity in the literature. The diagnosis and surgical management is discussed. This report emphasises the clinical principle that parotid masses causing an acute facial palsy are not necessarily malignant in nature. Intra-operative frozen section histology is helpful in saving the patient from unnecessarily radical surgery.

Three cases of penetrating sinus injuries due to air gun pellets are presexnted in order to illustrate the potentially serious consequences of air gun injuries. Primary surgery was performed in all cases.

We have used confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM), high-voltage electron microscopy (HVEM), and intracellular recording techniques to study volume changes in cultured Aplysia pacemaker neurons. Hyper- and hypo-tonic artificial sea water (ASW) decreased the pacemaker frequency and led to depolarization and hyperpolarization, respectively. However, when negative or positive current was injected into neurons in normal ASW, the frequency decreased with hyperpolarization but increased with depolarization. This suggests that the membrane potential is not the only factor underlying the reduction of the pacemaker activity.
Changes in cell volume were monitored with a CLSM and paralleled progressive changes in osmolarity. The neurons swelled and shrank nonuniformly, and, although an optical section through the middle of the cell was monitored every 4 s for as long as 14 min, a regulatory volume decrease or increase was never observed, indicating an osmometer-like behavior. The time course of shrinkage was faster than swelling after returning to control ASW after a hypotonic shock, reflecting a possible mechanical stress on the cytoskeleton.
Thick sections observed in the HVEM confirmed that membrane infoldings were present in our cultured Aplysia neurons. We hypothesize that a change in length of the latter in shrunken and swollen neurons could provide an explanation on the ultrastructural level for the increase and decrease in membrane surface area observed by CLSM. We conclude that by combining a confocal microscope with an electrophysiological set-up, three-dimensional morphology and physiological properties can be studied in living cells in real-time. This approach provides the means to correlate cell volume-related alterations and physiology.

From June 15 to 28, 1991 the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory (CGRO) observed the radio-loud quasar 3C 273. All four CGRO instruments detected radiation from this quasar in their relevant energy range (from 20 keV to 5 GeV). Simultaneous and quasi-simultaneous observations (spanning the time period May 27 – July 25, 1991) by instruments sensitive at other wavelengths have also been obtained. The data from all these observations spanning the frequency range from ∼ 109 Hz to ∼ 1026 Hz were collected and analysed. The resulting energy-density spectrum is shown in the figure below. It shows two maxima, one in the UV, another one at low-energy γ-rays which have nearly the same strength (the corresponding luminosities per decade of frequency for H0 = 60(km/s)/Mpc are 3.2·1046 erg/s and 2.7·1046 erg/s, respectively). A break of the spectrum at low-energy γ-rays is evident. From a detailed analysis a break energy of (2±1.5) MeV could be derived corresponding to a frequency of (4.8±3.6)·1020 Hz. The observed spectral break between X- and γ-rays is ∼ 0.8, much higher than the value of 0.5 predicted by some models. A more detailed paper on this topic is in preparation (Lichti et al.).
